Johnny Depp Leaves France for Tax ReasonsJohnny Depp has ‘left’ France because of tax reasons, despite the fact that he told The Connexion that it is a “country that has made me very happy – the culture, the feeling of the place” in their December 2010 issue.
The Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Pirates of the Carribean star has said that the reason for his move is because the French Government were wanting him to become a permanent French resident and he “is not ready to give up (his) American citizenship”, according to an article by Decca Atikenhead in The Guardian.
If you spend more than 183 days in France you are deemed to be a resident for income tax purposes. The problem arises with the fact that there is no tax treaty with the US : it is one of the few countries where income tax is based on citizenship and not residency. He used to co-own a restaurant/club in Paris called Man Ray (after the avant-garde artist Man Ray) with Sean Penn and John Malkovich.
Famous for not liking the media, Johnny Depp cancelled all his interviews at one Cannes Film Festival and refused to get out of bed.
Depp and his actor/singer partner Vanessa Paradis have two children and have been seen enjoying a relatively ‘normal’ family life in the small village of Plan de la Tour in the Massif des Maures, inland from Sainte Maxime, where they mingle with the locals in the café without being bothered.
The property, which is an estate containing a vineyard, was a gift to Vanessa Paradis in 2007 to celebrate the release of her album, Divinidylle. Well-known as a lover of fine wines, at that time the local wine co-operative – Les Fouleurs de Saint Pons – told decanter.com that the estate did not contain winemaking facilities and they didn’t receive any of their grapes. However, in 2008, Depp is purported to have shipped over ten boxes of his own wine to the Illinois set of the crime caper, Public Enemies, that he was shooting with Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard.
No news of the estate being up for sale has been heard on the grapevine !
