Severe weather has caused flooding in Provence & the Riviera once more


Severe storms and heavy rain throughout yesterday and overnight have caused more flooding in Provence and the Riviera.

The weather front which is covering France and has 16 departments on Orange weather alert, has also spread through the North of Italy causing the death of six people in Genoa and putting Rome in a state of alert.

In our region, large sections of the A8 autoroute were under water around the Capitou péage in Fréjus westbound and queues of traffic of around 4km long were caused around the Mandelieu and Mougins sections eastbound.

The Var river overflowed its banks between Nice and Saint Laurent du Var and closed the road down to Nice Airport [see main picture] and the Cap 3000 car park nearest the river was also flooded.

Firemen are out helping with flooded homes and businesses throughout the region and ten people had to be airlifted to safety in Roquebrune-sur-Argens.

A holiday home was hit by lightning in Gassin.

Many coastal roads have been forced to close due to high seas and in the Alps there are avalanche warnings above 1 600 – 2 200 metres.

At one point during the night 155 mm of rain fell in the space of an hour at the Tanneron dam and the Var and Nartuby rivers have swollen to Yellow alert with the Argens reaching critical levels.

In the Bouches du Rhône, the Préfecture has closed the routes next to the Rhône in Arles and traffic around the A7 and Marseille is slow, with vehicles aquaplaning.

More heavy rain of 80–100 mm is forecast overnight with windy conditions.
